Located in the heart of Downtown, Columbus Commons is a premier urban park that’s designed to multitask: it serves the neighborhood as a vital green oasis, while offering features that make it the perfect spot for city-wide events. Columbus Commons boasts world-class gardens, a state-of-the-art performance space known as the Columbus Bicentennial Pavilion, a hand-carved carousel, and two cafés. In fact, this family-friendly, community space hosts almost 200 events annually.
The Commons stands at the original site of City Center Mall, which drew over 100,000 visitors at its opening in 1989. In its prime, the mall was a 1.25 million square foot shopping mecca with 144 tenants in a space anchored by high-end retailers of the era such as Jacobson’s. Over 20 years, however, communities change: although the physical structure of the mall was sound, the passage of time rendered it a hulking shell; deserted, except for a few remaining tenants. After exploring options for revitalization and re-use, CDDC resolved that the site provided a novel opportunity to create a mixed-use development anchored by a permanent green space.
As it turned out, an urban park – a critical amenity in every major metropolitan area – was exactly what the growing Downtown residential and professional community needed. When demolition of the mall began in late 2009, the structure was dismantled with surgical precision. The already eco-friendly project recycled an estimated 80% of all materials from the former City Center, far exceeding its mandated goal. One year after demolition, construction of Columbus Commons was completed in late 2010. Since its inaugural season, the park has hosted hundreds of events annually, including the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Picnic with the Pops series, national-act concerts, family events and movie screenings on the lawn, food truck events, and free group fitness classes.
Including the cost of demolition, the development of the park and the construction of the project was completed for $25 million, and to date, Columbus Commons has triggered additional private investment of nearly $400 million in the neighborhood known as RiverSouth. As an anchor amenity, the Commons has catalyzed the ongoing, market-driven development of this walkable Downtown neighborhood, which integrates residential properties with retail, office, and entertainment opportunities.
