Artist Commune: Ekphrasis

Artist Commune: Ekphrasis brings together the lyrical voices of poets Ajanaé Dawkins and Tyiesha Radford Shorts with the visual imagination of artist Arris’ Cohen for an evening of boundary-dissolving creation. Experience art that speaks and poetry that paints as these artists transform one another’s work through the ancient practice of ekphrasis.

noun: ekphrasis
1. the use of detailed description of a work of visual art as a literary device.

On Friday, April 25 from 6–8 PM, join us at Urban Arts Space for a night where visual art inspires poetic response, poetry births new imagery, and the dialogue between art forms reveals colors we’ve never seen, sounds we’ve never heard, and feelings yet to be felt.

The Marriage of Figaro

It’s your world, but I make my way in it.

Regarded as one of the greatest operas ever written, The Marriage of Figaro is a screwball comedy complete with disguises, surprises, and compromises, and comes to life with an impressive cast of singers.

The barber of Seville is getting hitched today! The passions and perils of love and marriage collide in one uproarious day as Figaro struggles to get his bride, Susanna, to the altar unscathed. Identities are concealed, manners upended, plots foiled … Soon, everyone’s involved in the farcical antics, from a vengeful doctor and his matronly housekeeper to a bumbling teenage page!

Mozart’s breathlessly paced comic masterpiece–one of the world’s all-time favorites based on French playwright Beaumarchais’s “sequel” to The Barber of Seville–comes to vibrant life through enchanting music marked by glorious arias, tender duets, and of course the celebrated effervescent overture. Clever disguises and absurd mix-ups keep the laughs and surprises coming in this charming exploration of the perils of temptation, the grace of forgiveness, and the triumph of love.

“Creation’s Stewards: A family-friendly climate action event”

Celebrate Earth Day with family fun and climate action at the Washington Gladden Social Justice Park on Sunday, April 27. The free event, “Creation’s Stewards,” will start at 12:30 p.m. with a local food truck and with students from the Columbus College of Art & Design helping children create sidewalk chalk art – a way to get kids involved in environmental creativity.

A program will begin at 1 p.m. with speakers addressing local issues of environmental sustainability and growing the city’s tree canopy. The program will conclude by 2:15 p.m. Parking without charge will be available adjacent to the park for those attending the event.

The park is located at the corner of East Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue in downtown Columbus.

Named for the Columbus pastor who was a national leader in the Social Gospel movement of the late 19th century, the Washington Gladden Social Justice Park is the nation’s first park devoted to social justice. On its Pathway of Justice, the park has dozens of guide stones engraved with inspiring quotes from social justice champions. The park also displays the unique sculpture, “Our Single Garment of Destiny,” inspired by the metaphor used by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his Letter from Birmingham Jail.

The LONGEST public artwork in Columbus is BACK 🪢

After hibernating for the winter season, Janet Echelman’s, “Current” made its spring debut over the weekend! Reigning above the intersection of Gay & High Streets, the sculpture lowers the ceiling of the cityscape for the Gay Street District 🏙️

“Current” returns to the intersection as more local businesses bloom and bud in the neighborhood 🌸 Businesses including Evolverie Clothing, Brandt Gallery, Artisans &, and Soul 2 Go join the area with Quality Wellness, Restalgic Atelier and more art galleries on the way.

The UnderCurrent series will be back this year where we shut down the street for an afternoon of pedestrian-only activities! Last year, folks came out for the Natural Wine Festival, Oyster Fest, Silent Disco and more! Stay tuned for the full season line-up.

About “Current” ⤵️
As the longest public artwork in Columbus, the sculpture is made of 78 miles of richly-colored twine woven into over 500,000 knots. “Current” was made in collaboration with a bio-engineering firm to ensure the safety of birds and other animals to navigate without harm. It’s illuminated daily at sunset 🌆
If you’re the type of person that will stop for the world’s largest ball of twine while on a road trip, you can DIY your own sightseeing list with these Downtown spots!
