It’s time to get familiar with your favorite cuts of pork. Join Seth and Lyndsey Teter of Six Buckets Farm as they lead a hands-on class on how to break down a whole hog. Lyndsey and Seth will share a glimpse into their own home life—the couple has broken down a “bazillion” pigs together and eat their own pork almost every day.

This class is designed for cooks who want to incorporate freshly butchered pork in the home kitchen, with an eye toward quality and frugality. Purchasing a half carcass directly from farmers like the Teters and breaking it down into exactly what you’ll use at home is a zero-waste approach that’s also quite cost-effective.

Students will learn everything they need to know to break down a hog into different cuts and preparations common for home cooking. Follow along and break down your Six Buckets' hog from the primal cuts of your choice. Seth and Lyndsey will provide hands-on instruction and answer your questions about making bacon, sausages, rendering lard, and more. The cuts you’ll generally get from half-carcass-to-plate: jowl and belly bacon, sausage, loin roasts, pork chops, tenderloin, shoulder roasts or steaks, ham roasts or steaks, spare ribs and hocks.

Class reservations include the option to reserve a half or quarter hog. If you choose the half hog option, you are welcome to bring a friend along to help in butchering. Those who purchase the quarter share/one seat option will be partnered with another student to break down their half hog. We’ll have all the tools you need to break down your pig as well as vacuum-seal freezer bags and plenty of ice for keeping things cool.

Lunch and snacks are included.

Students will leave with:

* 1/2-hog: Approximately 70-80 pounds of quality pork, well-pieced, ready for eating or freezing (1/4-hog: approximately 30-40 pounds). Don’t forget to bring a large cooler!

* Instructions for rendering lard and cracklins, bones and scraps for making stock, and all the other goodies (hearts, livers, tongues) that are hard to get from a butcher—nothing ends up in the trash during this class

* An Instagrammable photo of themselves with a pig head (optional)

* The knowledge required to buy a half hog direct from a farmer without having to pay a hefty processing fee

Refund/Cancelation Policy:

No refunds or cancelations after Jan 13th.

Tickets are transferable with notice to 1400 Food Lab. Please include name, e-mail and phone numbers to info@1400foodlab.com

Uniquely curated by renowned author Wil Haygood, this exhibition celebrates the cultural blossoming that occurred in Harlem in the 1920-50s. Featuring works by Jacob Lawrence, Romare Beardon, Aaron Douglas, Augusta Savage, and unprinted photographs by James Van Der Zee, I, Too, Sing America explores the creative, religious, political, and cultural activism of everyday life during this period. In addition, the exhibition honors the extraordinary contributions and impact of individuals such as poet Langston Hughes and philosopher Alain Locke on the development of African American art, music, and literature.

In recent years the world of furniture design has been completely transformed. Once a fairly restrictive field in which form tended to follow function, it is today one of the most dynamic of all creative disciplines. Across a wide range of approaches - sometimes powered by new technology, sometimes simply by their imaginations - artists and designers alike are dramatically expanding the possibilities for furniture. This exhibition focuses exclusively on cutting-edge chair forms, including works by Ron Arad, Wendell Castle, Shiro Kuramata, Humberto and Fernando Campana, and Gaetano Pesce, Donald Judd and John Chamberlain; as well as Joris Laarman, whose high-tech and high-concept designs are shown in particular depth.

Guest Curated by Marc Benda of Friedman Benda and Glenn Adamson.

Supported in part by a grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council.

Take Up Space presents abstraction as it travels across floors, hangs on walls, and is suspended above stairwells. Abstraction runs throughout this space, exploring and becoming territory. The works – mostly paintings – are results of artists’ projects that consider the relevance and power of abstraction’s possibilities.

The works in these galleries respond: to architecture, to history, to color, to taste, to edges, to time, and to our sociopolitical climate. They are explorations of form. They require us to notice their experimentation. They charge us to take the color, shapes, and scale of their structures into account.

Artists include Sarah Cain, Lita Albuquerque, Zachary Armstrong, Sarah Crowner, Tomory Dodge, Tomashi Jackson, Pamela Jorden, Odili Donald Odita, and Jackie Saccoccio.

Supported in part by a grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council.

Floyd Cooper’s powerful children’s book illustrations depict a fictional account by Aaron Reynolds of Rosa Parks’ 1955 refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in this exhibition at Columbus Museum of Art. Parks’ arrest led to a 13-month boycott of city buses. The boycott ended when the US Supreme Court ruled that segregation on public transportation was unconstitutional. In Cooper’s story, readers witness Rosa Parks’ arrest through the eyes of a young, African American boy, who was also on the bus that day. Cooper illustrates the story with a technique in which he removes areas of paint from his oil washes with a stretchy eraser. He calls this method a “subtractive process.” Accompanying the original art for the book are story boards and preliminary drawings. Back of the Bus (Philomel Books, 2010) was designated a Notable Book of 2011 by the National Library Association.

Exhibition of artwork displayed on the mezzanine at North Market. The January/February 2019 exhibition features artwork by local artist Brittni Hall.

In Brittni's own words she describes her artwork:

"Art has always been a passion of mine. Even from an early age growing up in Columbus, Ohio, I always gravitated toward art classes as a form of self and creative expression. Though my career landed me in the technology field, art remains a driving force in my life. Whether it’s a photo, nature, or an image I see while driving, I constantly seek to create.

Living in Grandview allows me to gather inspiration from the surrounding areas of Ohio. I’m intrigued by combinations of colors along with simple and organic shapes which can be shown in all of my oil paintings. Some of my paintings explore the use of different materials such as wood, cloth and epoxy to finish the piece. Creating pieces that bring happiness to those who engage in my work makes my life that much more enjoyable."

On display this January and February!
