CAPA Summer Movie Series: Victor/Victoria

Dame Julie Andrews stars in a double gender bender as a woman impersonating a man impersonating a woman to find work in 1934 Paris in this classic comedy directed by the legendary (and Andrews’ husband) Blake Edwards.

When Victoria Grant and Carroll “Toddy” Todd (Robert Preston) meet after separate run-ins with club owner Labisse, they join forces to take the Paris nightclub scene by storm. Since Victoria can’t get a gig as a woman, she impersonates a man who just happens to be a female impersonator, and Toddy poses as her agent. The ruse works, and soon “Victor Grazinski” is working the hottest club in the city, also catching the eye of King Marchand (James Garner), an American club owner with mob ties. Victoria falls for him, as well, complicating both her rise to stardom and his business affiliations, as assumptions about Marchand’s sexuality are made. As pressure mounts and Toddy’s scheme starts to fall apart, Victoria has to choose between a career as Victor or a life as Victoria by King’s side.

Cast: Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston
