I Know Why the Blackbird Sings

In her titular autobiographical work, Maya Angelou asserts that “the caged bird sings of freedom.” But what song does the bird on free soil sing? I Know Why the Blackbird Sings revisits Ohio’s complicity in the practice of dispossession, kidnapping, and denial of due process through the locational efforts of Ohio’s free people.

Participating Artists: Tyiesha Radford Shorts, Valerie Boyer, Paisha Thomas

This show is on view concurrently with Don’t Sell Grandma’s House, a group exhibition curated by Tyiesha Radford Shorts.

Department of Art Faculty Exhibition

This fall, Urban Arts Space welcomes Ohio State’s Department of Art Faculty Exhibition. The show will feature current full-time, tenured, tenure track, and visiting faculty in the department.

Statehouse Haunted Tours

Step into the dark and historic hallways of the Ohio Statehouse and take a glimpse at figures from the past as you follow conductors through the shadowy hallways and chambers of the Statehouse.

These lantern-lit tours are offered in 2025 on Friday, Oct. 17; Saturday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 at the state Capitol, and depart through the darkened halls of the building every half hour between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

This is a ticketed event, and the historical tour is spooky and appropriate for ages twelve and older.

Tickets are available here. Adults are $16 and ages 12-17 are $8.

Affordable event parking will be available in the Statehouse Underground Garage.

NEW BUSINESS ALERT: Caroline’s is now open 🥪🚨

North Market Downtown is home to a new sandwich spot, Caroline’s! Named for Chef Justin Wotring’s niece, Caroline’s is a pop-up serving stacked sandwiches, housemade pickles, soups, and salads — all made from scratch! 🥗🥒

This spot is no stranger to unique creations. Find mouthwatering menu items like the Kimchi Cowboy, a pastrami sando with kimchi and charred green onion cream cheese and the Mush Love, a handheld where sauteed mushrooms are the star 🍄‍🟫

Pictured is the Corner club, a handheld with tender marinated chicken, thick cut bacon, and a house ranch on sourdough. It paired perfectly with a side of their housemade pickles! 🥒

Did you know the former YMCA building at 40 W Long St is being rebuilt into affordable housing apartments? Here’s what’s happening: 

➡️ Woda Cooper is transforming the former YMCA into Lofts at 40 Long, 121 affordable housing units. 

➡️ Lofts at 40 Long will be for people making 30-80% of the Area Median Income (AMI)

🏀 The building will maintain the historic nature of the building, by keeping amenities like the basketball court, upstairs track, and community room. 

🏘️ Everyone deserves the opportunity to live near their workplace, and this project will provide housing options for people at more income levels. Lofts at 40 Long will join workforce housing options like Topiary Park Crossing and the future Aspire Columbus in Downtown. 

🗓️ The apartments are expected to be complete by end of 2027.
