SUMMARY:Don't Sell Grandma's House
DESCRIPTION:Don’t Sell Grandma’s House represents a collaborative approach to recreating sites violently fractured by redlining and dispossession. The process of immersive world-building begs the question\, “Where do we gather when our land is gone?” while also thinking about the modified ways that families transmit their histories in intimate and sacred spaces. \nThis show is on view concurrently with I Know Why the Blackbird Sings\, a multimedia exhibition created by Tyiesha Radford Shorts. \nParticipating Artists: Keya Crenshaw\, Matthew Pitts\, Sharbreon Plummer\, Marshall Shorts \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 4\, 6–8 PM at Urban Arts Space

SUMMARY:Off-Road Map-Making with Curator Mona Gazala
DESCRIPTION:This drop-in workshop is open to all ages and skill levels\, and it will include a casual curator’s walk-through of the exhibition\, Cartography. \nWhat if your body was a map? What if your family and your circles of influence were continents? What if a map was a dream of the future\, or a political statement? What can maps describe beyond the physical world? Curator Mona Gazala will facilitate this open studio by sharing examples of maps that defy traditional forms and definitions. She will give 3–4 map activity prompts for those who would like one…but you are more than welcome to blaze your own trail! \nThere will be a wide assortment of art supplies available. Participants are also welcome to bring their own printed family photos\, clippings\, maps\, journals\, or other materials to work into their designs. \nThis event is part of Cartography\, an exhibition at Urban Arts Space on view from July 22–August 16. The artists in this exhibition\, whether Palestinian\, Kashmiri\, or Afro-Caribbean\, embark on similar missions to map out their personal relationships with ancestral and migratory lands. Their art gives voice to stories of imperialism\, racism\, and occupation\, while also exploring new vistas of identity\, connection and resilience. \nParticipating Artists: Hala Abubaker\, Michael Hambouz\, Ray Perez\, Numair Qadri\, Tabeena Wani\, and Mona Gazala

SUMMARY:Artist Walkthrough — Fragmented-Recaptured
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Sahar Tarighi for a walkthrough of her current group exhibition. \nFragmented–Recaptured brings together seven Kurdish artists in North America whose practices emerge from the enduring impacts of displacement\, state violence\, and systemic fragmentation. These artists engage with the lasting traces of collective trauma shaped by socio-political borders that have historically divided Kurdistan\, alongside the ongoing marginalization and systemic assimilation of the Kurds across Iran\, Iraq\, Syria\, and Turkey. \nThe exhibition presents a diasporic dialogue that explores the deep scars etched into Kurdish existence—whether carried in the body\, inscribed upon the land\, or woven into language\, memory\, and cultural forms. Some artists explore the body as a site where displacement\, violence\, and resistance are physically and emotionally registered. Others reflect on the land as a repository of memory or confront the erasure of cultural symbols and histories as further consequences of systemic oppression. \nTogether\, their practices open space to consider how the trauma of fragmentation has shaped Kurdish lives across generations\, geographies\, and mediums. These works address the reverberations of genocide\, inherited pain\, forced migration\, and cultural silencing\, holding space for layered experiences\, survival\, and the ongoing pursuit of healing. \nFragmented–Recaptured traces the layers of loss\, survival\, and resilience\, inviting viewers to reflect on how shared struggles and enduring longings can cultivate new forms of solidarity. Through art\, the exhibition honors Kurdish complexity—where wounds\, histories\, bodies\, lands\, and futures remain inseparably intertwined. \nParticipating Artists: Xeçe Khadija Baker\, Pedram Baldari\, Nuveen Barwari\, Huner Emin\, Yoosef Mohamadi\, Sener Ozmen\, Sahar Tarighi

SUMMARY:Book Signing & Film Screening with Mandy Shunnarah and Mona Gazala
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the lower gallery of Urban Arts Space for a screening of Mona Gazala’s documentary film\, Trail Markers (82 minutes). Part artist autobiography and part historical documentary\, this film follows Mona’s move to rural Darke County\, Ohio and her discovery of the unlikely existence of a significant artifact related to Palestine’s history\, housed in the county museum only a few miles from her new home. What is the artifact\, and how did it wind up there? Watch Trail Markers to learn the answers. \nPalestinian American writer Mandy Shunnarah (who figures prominently in the film) will be present and signing copies of their new poetry book\, We Had Mansions. \nThis project was supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. SUMMARY:Fragmented-Recaptured & Cartography Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a shared reception for our two exhibitions. \nFragmented-Recaptured is a coalescing dialogue between a group of artists residing in North America whose diasporic experiences are tethered by a common yet fragmented identity as Kurds. The works on display interrogate histories and modalities of marginalization and the systemic minoritization of the Kurds\, the largest stateless nation within the socio-political borders of the states (Iran\, Iraq\, Syria\, and Turkey) that rule over a part of their homeland Kurdistan. The exhibition navigates shared narratives of displacement\, conflict\, and resistance\, offering a deeply personal yet collective lens on the Kurdish experience recaptured through the new forms of diasporic conversation. \nParticipating Artists: Xeçe Khadija Baker\, Pedram Baldari\, Nuveen Barwari\, Huner Emin\, Yoosef Mohamadi\, Sener Ozmen\, Sahar Tarighi \nThe artists in this exhibition\, whether Palestinian\, Kashmiri\, or Afro-Caribbean\, embark on similar missions to map out their personal relationships with ancestral and migratory lands. SUMMARY:Artist Commune: Journal Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Urban Arts Space is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of the first issue of Artist Commune—a community arts journal. This annual arts publication reconsiders accessibility in arts research and community engagement. Artist Commune features work from artists within the Columbus community\, art organizations across Central Ohio\, and arts-based researchers at academic institutions. \nThe forthcoming print and online journal contains a collection of selected pieces that push the boundaries of how art is made\, viewed\, and understood\, particularly through community engagement. This issue\, themed around Care/Culture/Justice\, includes visual art\, personal essays\, poetry\, arts research\, artist interviews\, video/film\, and community project spotlights. \nThe launch party will include a free copy of the Commune. Attendees can also enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks alongside poetry readings from our contributors. \nJoin us on May 15 at our downtown gallery! Doors open at 6:00 PM\, with readings beginning at 7:00 PM.

SUMMARY:Vessels in Red
DESCRIPTION:Vessels in Red is a multisensory exhibition exploring the body as a portal for emotional transformation. Expanding on Vessels in Blue\, it merges visual art\, dance\, and spoken word into an immersive experience where the gallery becomes a living laboratory of collaborative artmaking. \nArtists and curators\, Miriam King\, Ashley Martin\, and Christina Navarro use monochromatic red works to examine how our bodies process love\, shame\, guilt\, anger\, and grief. The exhibition engages multiple senses: sight through artwork and lighting; touch through varied fabrics; sound through spoken word\, music\, and installations; and smell through rich\, primal scents and performances on opening night. \nBy dissolving the boundary between artist and audience\, Vessels in Red challenges traditional art consumption\, fostering a space for self-liberation\, inspired by Audre Lorde’s words: “When I dare to be powerful—to use my strength in the service of my vision—then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” \nCurated and created by Christina Navarro (visual and performance artist\, writer)\, Miriam King (transformative practitioner exploring movement and emotional transmutation)\, and Ashley Martin (visual artist\, community builder\, storyteller)\, this exhibition invites viewers to see their own emotions reflected\, making Vessels in Red as much about the audience’s journey as the artistic vision that brought these vessels of transformation into being. \nExhibition Run: Tuesday\, May 13 – Saturday\, June 7 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, May 16\, 6–8 PM \nClosing Panel: Saturday\, June 7\, Time TBD

SUMMARY:Afrofuturism Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:For this writing workshop\, we will consider what it takes to reach a future where everyone matters. We’ll follow a path carved by recent movements in fiction such as hopepunk and solarpunk\, which feature characters fighting for utopia while resisting its detractors. In a guided writing exercise\, writers will outline the rules for their ideal world\, taking inspiration from the utopian vision for Wakanda in Black Panther and N.K. Jemisin’s short story “The Ones Who Stay and Fight.” \nThis event is a collaboration between FIYAH Magazine and Irrepressible Soul as part of the FREEQUENCY exhibition at Urban Arts Space. FIYAH is a quarterly speculative fiction magazine that features fantasy and science fiction stories by and about Black people of the African Diaspora. \nAbout the Workshop Host: Nelson Rolon is a writer and MFA graduate based in Columbus\, Ohio. His debut novelette\, Saudade\, was published in FIYAH Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction (2018)\, and received mention in Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy (2019). SUMMARY:Artist Commune: Portraits of Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Portraiture is the art of creating portraits\, whether of others or yourself\, capturing the essence of a person through an artistic lens. At May’s Artist Commune\, we’ll be focusing on photography portraiture and finding unique ways to approach this art form. Bring any camera you’d like\, whether that’s your smartphone\, DSLR camera\, or a film camera—no photography experience required! Artist Commune is always free and open to all. \nWe’ll start the event at Urban Arts Space\, where each participant will choose a piece from the two exhibitions on view—Freequency and A Love Letter to This Bridge Called My Back—to inspire new ways of considering how we portray people and personal expression. How can portraits liberate us and others? What is gained and lost from what is shown or not shown in a photograph? \nAfter we choose our sources of inspiration\, we’ll take a guided walk down High Street\, finding interesting backdrops for portraits in downtown Columbus. We encourage attendees to collaborate with each other in taking photos and sharing ideas. Community is the essence of Artist Commune. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, we will still host this program\, but the photo portion will happen inside the gallery and the covered Lazarus building galleria and surrounding walkways. We can also get creative with props and lighting if we are limited to the indoors!

Once the time runs out\, artists will showcase their work on a runway and explain its significance to them. \nIn the spirit of Earth Day\, we want artists to consider what sustainability means to them\, using nature as a guiding theme. Explore the relationship between fashion and the natural world\, and consider how you can adapt your creations to reflect this connection. What patterns\, colors\, and shapes can we draw from nature? How can fashion tell a story about our relationship with the natural world?

SUMMARY:Artist Commune: Portable Paradise Pop-Up Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Urban Arts Space is excited to announce the theme for March’s Artist Commune: Portable Paradise. We invite artists to radically explore the idea of paradise in a pop-up exhibition. Questions that shape this theme: Who are the architects of Paradise? Who is on the margins in dominant ideas of Paradise? Who is invited? Who gets the authority to name what Paradise is like? How do you get there? Shaped but not limited by these questions\, we’re asking artists to create work that engages the metaphysical\, tangible\, and personal to re-imagine Paradise. \nThe objective of this exhibition is to showcase a diverse range of interpretations of Paradise through various artistic mediums. We aim to create a space that challenges the way our unique identities and socioeconomic positions shape our concept of Paradise.

SUMMARY:"Being Michelle" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Being Michelle follows the astonishing journey of a deaf and disabled woman who survived incarceration and abuse under unimaginable circumstances by a system that refused to accommodate her needs as a deaf person with autism. Michelle’s trajectory changed when she met Kim Law\, a blind volunteer life coach who teaches classes to people in prison. Today\, outside of prison\, Kim and Michelle are doing the difficult work of unraveling Michelle’s history\, of telling the story of Michelle’s traumatic childhood and her adverse experiences in the criminal justice system. With the support of Kim\, Michelle realizes her own voice and strength. Throughout the film Michelle’s artwork provides her own depiction of the trauma she survived as well as a means to her recovery.  \nUltimately\, Being Michelle is a story of redemption. It is about the bonds between women committed to thriving in a broken system\, who are forging a path to healing that can only come through facing the truth and communicating it\, together.  \nThis event is held in collaboration with Art Possible as part of the Reelabilities Film Festival.
