SUMMARY:For Your Information: Discuss\, Define\, Describe
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off our For Your Information series with “Discuss\, Define\, Describe”—how to put language to your artistic practice\, inspirations\, and process. Columbus-based artists Lance Johnson and Ky Smiley will join Urban Arts Space Director Dr. Terron Banner in an open conversation about articulating creative vision\, identifying your artistic process\, and finding the words to express what influences your work. This discussion will illuminate how to harness the power of language as a tool for connection and introspection while maintaining agency over your creative voice. \nAfter the one-hour panel\, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and continue the discussion in a judgment-free environment. \nFor Your Information (FYI) was designed to create space for artists to access knowledge and resources to build a sustainable creative practice. Free and open to all\, FYI is a bimonthly professional development series from Urban Arts Space\, offering in-depth learning sessions on topics essential to building an art career. These gatherings will typically be held on Thursday evenings from 6:00–8:00 PM and feature field experts who will share their knowledge through workshops\, panel discussions\, or lectures\, followed by a dedicated time for questions and connection. \nWhether you’re interested in beginning your professional path\, or looking to deepen your existing practice\, FYI is open and welcome to all artists across disciplines. In our space\, we encourage dialogue\, connection\, and curiosity\, believing that access to knowledge and information is fundamental to fostering a thriving arts ecosystem. We invite you to join us to learn\, ask questions\, and strengthen connections with your practice while supporting others.

SUMMARY:Waiting for the Light to Change
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 MFA Thesis Exhibition for the Department of Art at The Ohio State University invites the public to encounter the richness of our interdisciplinary MFA program in Studio Art. Through coursework in the Department of Art and across other academic departments and centers\, mentorship through independent study with art faculty\, as well as a graduate students’ thesis committee\, each MFA candidate pursues a unique and rigorous art practice for three years. Waiting for the Light to Change features the work of nine MFA graduate students whose art bravely responds to today’s cultural contexts. \nThrough artistic mediums including interactive kinetic sculpture\, painting\, drawing\, illustration and cartoons\, text and poetry\, ceramics\, video and moving image\, found roadside materials\, photograms\, photography\, and the body\, each artist addresses historical forces and our world today. With each medium\, dynamic methodologies include pressing feet and hands into clay\, submerging one’s body in water\, driving a car\, weaving hair and thread\, laser-cutting paper\, and the imaging of breath. In tandem with each art practice\, many of the works are brought to fruition through dialogue with professors who are practicing artists\, the Department of Art’s phenomenal technicians\, and facilities\, therefore demystifying the notion that art is solely a solitary individualistic endeavor. The artists and artworks teach us how the space of the studio is deeply intertwined with the world—past\, present\, and future. \nEach artist in this exhibition contributes to the vast and ever-changing field of art in conjunction with their own specific fields of research\, life experience\, and dedicated artistic inquiry. Each of their art practices forge steadfast presence for interconnected spheres of influence including relational aesthetics\, geometry\, queer theory\, mixed-race studies\, Eastern philosophy\, phenomenology\, psychology\, pandemics such as Covid-19 and the AIDS crisis\, systems of control and resistance\, connections between self and place\, the interstices of public and private\, the mystery of trees\, dog walking\, notions of the superhero\, issues of representation\, multilingual identity\, and diasporic experiences. Each body of work in Waiting for the Light to Change signals and invites you—to be challenged\, to closely observe\, listen\, and ask questions. \n—Gina Osterloh\, Associate Professor of Art\, Department of Art\, The Ohio State University \nParticipating Artists: Banerjee\, Shaheen Beardsley\, Maria Conlon\, Onni Estabrook\, Samuel Lo\, Takahiro Okubo\, Shruti Shankar\, Sam Wrigglesworth\, Xuan \nReception: Saturday\, February 21 from 5–7 PM at Urban Arts Space

SUMMARY:Poetry Collage Party for The Ship and the Storm
DESCRIPTION:Join the authors of the poetry collection The Ship and the Storm for a free poetry collage party at Urban Arts Space on Saturday\, September 20 from 2–4 PM. You’re invited to express yourself through both collage and poetry with workshop prompts from artist Emily Morgan (who created the book’s beautiful cover art!) and poets Diane Callahan and David Dixon. During the open mic portion\, you’ll have the chance to share your creation and connect with other poets. \nThe party will include complimentary catering and free copies of The Ship and the Storm for all attendees! \nThis project was generously funded by the Artist Projects Grant from Greater Columbus Arts Council. \nThe Ship and the Storm is a conversation through poetry between two unique voices\, exploring themes of nature and nostalgia\, struggle and the self. Diane Callahan and David Dixon take readers from Ohio’s familiar landscapes to the battlefields of America’s War on Terror—and everywhere in between. Callahan brings her incisive wit to examinations of wanderlust and womanhood\, while Dixon casts a veteran’s sincere-but-jaded eye toward violence and regret. The Ship and the Storm is a collection that rewards contemplation\, with each revisit uncovering new threads of meaning and connection. \nDiane Callahan is a writer and editor who also happens to work at an art gallery. On her YouTube channel\, Quotidian Writer\, she provides advice for aspiring authors. She serves as the managing editor for Story Garden Publishing and was the former fiction editor for Consequence\, a literary magazine centered on the consequences of war. \nInstagram\, YouTube\, and Bluesky: @quotidianwriter \nDavid Dixon is a father\, veteran\, and writer whose poetry appears in hand picked poetry and Wrath-Bearing Tree. His short fiction has been featured in several anthologies\, and his science fiction series\, Black Sun\, was published by Dark Brew Press. \nBluesky: @dixondaver \nEmily Morgan (aka Lovely But Dead) is a Columbus\, Ohio-based collage artist known for her intricate\, surreal collages that blend natural motifs with precision craftwork. Emily lives with her partner\, Alex\, and their three cats. She is the founder of the Columbus Collage Collective and created the collage cover art for The Ship and the Storm. \nInstagram: @lovelybutdead

SUMMARY:Reception — I Know Why the Blackbird Sings & Don't Sell Grandma's House
DESCRIPTION:In her titular autobiographical work\, Maya Angelou asserts that “the caged bird sings of freedom.” But what song does the bird on free soil sing? I Know Why the Blackbird Sings revisits Ohio’s complicity in the practice of dispossession\, kidnapping\, and denial of due process through the locational efforts of Ohio’s free people. \nThis show is on view concurrently with Don’t Sell Grandma’s House from September 2–27\, 2025. Don’t Sell Grandma’s House represents a collaborative approach to recreating sites violently fractured by redlining and dispossession. The process of immersive world-building begs the question\, “Where do we gather when our land is gone?” while also thinking about the modified ways that families transmit their histories in intimate and sacred spaces. \nParticipating Artists: Tyiesha Radford Shorts\, Valerie Boyer\, Paisha Thomas\, Keya Crenshaw\, Matthew Pitts\, Sharbreon Plummer\, Marshall Shorts

SUMMARY:Off-Road Map-Making with Curator Mona Gazala
DESCRIPTION:This drop-in workshop is open to all ages and skill levels\, and it will include a casual curator’s walk-through of the exhibition\, Cartography. \nWhat if your body was a map? What if your family and your circles of influence were continents? What if a map was a dream of the future\, or a political statement? What can maps describe beyond the physical world? Curator Mona Gazala will facilitate this open studio by sharing examples of maps that defy traditional forms and definitions. She will give 3–4 map activity prompts for those who would like one…but you are more than welcome to blaze your own trail! \nThere will be a wide assortment of art supplies available. Participants are also welcome to bring their own printed family photos\, clippings\, maps\, journals\, or other materials to work into their designs. \nThis event is part of Cartography\, an exhibition at Urban Arts Space on view from July 22–August 16. The artists in this exhibition\, whether Palestinian\, Kashmiri\, or Afro-Caribbean\, embark on similar missions to map out their personal relationships with ancestral and migratory lands. Their art gives voice to stories of imperialism\, racism\, and occupation\, while also exploring new vistas of identity\, connection and resilience. \nParticipating Artists: Hala Abubaker\, Michael Hambouz\, Ray Perez\, Numair Qadri\, Tabeena Wani\, and Mona Gazala

SUMMARY:Artist Walkthrough — Fragmented-Recaptured
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Sahar Tarighi for a walkthrough of her current group exhibition. \nFragmented–Recaptured brings together seven Kurdish artists in North America whose practices emerge from the enduring impacts of displacement\, state violence\, and systemic fragmentation. These artists engage with the lasting traces of collective trauma shaped by socio-political borders that have historically divided Kurdistan\, alongside the ongoing marginalization and systemic assimilation of the Kurds across Iran\, Iraq\, Syria\, and Turkey. \nThe exhibition presents a diasporic dialogue that explores the deep scars etched into Kurdish existence—whether carried in the body\, inscribed upon the land\, or woven into language\, memory\, and cultural forms. Some artists explore the body as a site where displacement\, violence\, and resistance are physically and emotionally registered. Others reflect on the land as a repository of memory or confront the erasure of cultural symbols and histories as further consequences of systemic oppression. \nTogether\, their practices open space to consider how the trauma of fragmentation has shaped Kurdish lives across generations\, geographies\, and mediums. These works address the reverberations of genocide\, inherited pain\, forced migration\, and cultural silencing\, holding space for layered experiences\, survival\, and the ongoing pursuit of healing. \nFragmented–Recaptured traces the layers of loss\, survival\, and resilience\, inviting viewers to reflect on how shared struggles and enduring longings can cultivate new forms of solidarity. Through art\, the exhibition honors Kurdish complexity—where wounds\, histories\, bodies\, lands\, and futures remain inseparably intertwined. \nParticipating Artists: Xeçe Khadija Baker\, Pedram Baldari\, Nuveen Barwari\, Huner Emin\, Yoosef Mohamadi\, Sener Ozmen\, Sahar Tarighi

SUMMARY:Book Signing & Film Screening with Mandy Shunnarah and Mona Gazala
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the lower gallery of Urban Arts Space for a screening of Mona Gazala’s documentary film\, Trail Markers (82 minutes). Part artist autobiography and part historical documentary\, this film follows Mona’s move to rural Darke County\, Ohio and her discovery of the unlikely existence of a significant artifact related to Palestine’s history\, housed in the county museum only a few miles from her new home. What is the artifact\, and how did it wind up there? Watch Trail Markers to learn the answers. \nPalestinian American writer Mandy Shunnarah (who figures prominently in the film) will be present and signing copies of their new poetry book\, We Had Mansions. \nThis project was supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. \nThis event is part of Cartography\, an exhibition at Urban Arts Space on view from July 22–August 16. SUMMARY:Fragmented-Recaptured & Cartography Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a shared reception for our two exhibitions. \nFragmented-Recaptured is a coalescing dialogue between a group of artists residing in North America whose diasporic experiences are tethered by a common yet fragmented identity as Kurds. The works on display interrogate histories and modalities of marginalization and the systemic minoritization of the Kurds\, the largest stateless nation within the socio-political borders of the states (Iran\, Iraq\, Syria\, and Turkey) that rule over a part of their homeland Kurdistan. The exhibition navigates shared narratives of displacement\, conflict\, and resistance\, offering a deeply personal yet collective lens on the Kurdish experience recaptured through the new forms of diasporic conversation. \nParticipating Artists: Xeçe Khadija Baker\, Pedram Baldari\, Nuveen Barwari\, Huner Emin\, Yoosef Mohamadi\, Sener Ozmen\, Sahar Tarighi \nThe artists in this exhibition\, whether Palestinian\, Kashmiri\, or Afro-Caribbean\, embark on similar missions to map out their personal relationships with ancestral and migratory lands. SUMMARY:Vessels in Red
DESCRIPTION:Vessels in Red is a multisensory exhibition exploring the body as a portal for emotional transformation. Expanding on Vessels in Blue\, it merges visual art\, dance\, and spoken word into an immersive experience where the gallery becomes a living laboratory of collaborative artmaking. \nArtists and curators\, Miriam King\, Ashley Martin\, and Christina Navarro use monochromatic red works to examine how our bodies process love\, shame\, guilt\, anger\, and grief. The exhibition engages multiple senses: sight through artwork and lighting; touch through varied fabrics; sound through spoken word\, music\, and installations; and smell through rich\, primal scents and performances on opening night. \nBy dissolving the boundary between artist and audience\, Vessels in Red challenges traditional art consumption\, fostering a space for self-liberation\, inspired by Audre Lorde’s words: “When I dare to be powerful—to use my strength in the service of my vision—then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” \nCurated and created by Christina Navarro (visual and performance artist\, writer)\, Miriam King (transformative practitioner exploring movement and emotional transmutation)\, and Ashley Martin (visual artist\, community builder\, storyteller)\, this exhibition invites viewers to see their own emotions reflected\, making Vessels in Red as much about the audience’s journey as the artistic vision that brought these vessels of transformation into being. \nExhibition Run: Tuesday\, May 13 – Saturday\, June 7 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, May 16\, 6–8 PM \nClosing Panel: Saturday\, June 7\, Time TBD
