Staycation - All You Ever Wanted

Spring break season is upon us. If you are among those who won’t be heading to warmer climes or snowy slopes, never you fear. And, while the local weather forecast remains gray and chilly, you can find local fun to make your staycation all the break you need.

Music and Roars

Kids love dinosaurs. So, Columbus Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Jurassic Park in Concert will add to the staycation spectacular. While it can be tricky exposing your kids to the arts, this program is the perfect introduction. Watch the classic film in HD, with John William’s score performed live by the Columbus Symphony. It’s a unique way to experience a movie, and one sure to entertain your passel. Plus, tickets run just $26-$69 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

Mardi Gras Munch

If you can’t hit New Orleans for Mardi Gras, head to the Mardi Gras Cafe Pop Up in Schokko on March 21. Schokko Cafe is located in the Columbus Museum of Art. And, you can stuff yourselves with all your Cajun favorites like jambalaya, gumbo, hush puppies and more. Of course, the Mardi Gras grub acts as the perfect hook to bring the gang to the Museum. Then, stay for the amazing art. Explore exhibits like Life in the Age of Rembrandt and Back of the Bus: Illustrations by Floyd Cooper

Blooms, Butterflies and Bonsai

Or, head to Franklin Park Conservatory for Blooms & Butterflies and feel like you're in the tropics. First, watch hundreds of butterflies fly through the Pacific Island Water Garden. And, if you come in the afternoon, hit Butterflies 101 at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. with a specialist who will give you deeper insights into the species. Then, your littles might love looking at little trees. So, visit the Bonsai exhibit in the Dorothy M. Davis Shophouse. Finally, the Hot Shop in the outdoor glassblowing pavilion features demonstrations by professional glass blowers. Your kids will be mesmerized watching them gather molten glass and blow it into an amazing piece of artwork.

Camp at COSI

For those looking to keep the kiddos occupied, COSI has you covered. COSI’s School’s Out Camps give your little ones a fun and educational day. So, for grades K-5, check out the schedule and choose a day or two or more that interests your budding scientist. Does she want to be an astronaut? Is he a chemistry geek? You’re in luck. Or, for the middle school set, choose a Tech Studio Camp. Camp dates run March 25-29 and again on Good Friday (April 19). Daily cost of $60 for members and $65 for non-members includes two daily snacks and all supplies. Just send lunch and your science-loving kid. Reservations close at 6 a.m. the day of the camp or once it has sold out.
