State of DowntownCapital Crossroads and Discovery SIDs staff research and track downtown development. To keep the community informed of the findings, the SIDs release the State of Downtown 2018, a comprehensive report covering everything from major investments to retail and housing. The report is unveiled at the Columbus Metropolitan Club (CMC) at an annual luncheon. Developers, business reporters, brokers and the Central Ohio community show up to get the latest on downtown development.

On February 20, CMC hosted the State of Downtown 2018 to a packed house of more than 300 attendees. Deputy Director of Research, Planning and Facilities Marc Conte unveiled highlights of the report.

State of Downtown 2018

  • Downtown's residential population grew to an estimated 9,000 residents.
  • The apartment occupancy rate is 95%.
  • $454 million of new investments are under construction.
  • $299 million of new investments were completed in 2018, including 80 on the Commons, the Michael B. Coleman Government Center and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum.

Executive Director Cleve Ricksecker moderated the event.  Discussion turned to economic development in the Discovery District. Panelists included Columbus College of Art and Design President Dr. Melanie Corn, Placemaker/Street disruptor at Kaufman Development Jessica Mathews, and Pizzuti Companies President Joel Pizzuti.
