Nutcracker: Tradition or Twist

Hip Hop Nutcracker

Do you go with the traditional? Or do you prefer your fun with a twist? This year, lovers of the Nutcracker have options for both. And, you know your holidays wouldn’t be complete without a healthy dose of Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy.

For years, families have made BalletMet’s spectacular interpretation of The Nutcracker a beloved holiday tradition. The magic returns to the Ohio Theatre December 7 - 23. So, make your holiday traditions list and check it twice. Then, grab the family and enjoy a production like no other. Watch Clara’s Christmas Eve journey to the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy as she dances with mice, tin soldiers and the Nutcracker Prince. The music of Tchaikovsky marries with the tremendous talent of more than 100 dancers, both professional and students. Tickets run $29 - $94.  If you are bringing children, BalletMet offers some great tips to help them enjoy the performance.

Tips for Taking Children to the Nutcracker

  • Consider reading them the story ahead of time. BalletMet recommends Ella Bella Ballerina and The Nutcracker.
  • Explain to your children the difference between ballet and other types of performance. Clarify that the performer will not talk or sing.
  • Before your are seated and during intermission, find some fun things to do around the theatre. This helps prevent fidgeting during the performance. You’ll find characters in costume on the 2nd floor during matinee performances. Look for the craft and coloring station on the 2nd level. And, listen to carolers inside and outside before the start of the show.
  • Or, meet the Nutcracker mascot in front of the theatre before the show.
  • And, if the kids just can’t make it through, consider taking a break. Slip out quietly and head to the lobby or 2nd floor craft area. You’ll find a TV with a live feed of the show.
  • Here is a great article with additional tips.

Or, if you choose tradition with a twist, consider The Hip Hop Nutcracker with MC Kurtis Blow. Still fun for the whole family, this re-imagining of the classic Tchaikovsky ballet features 12 all-star dancers, a DJ and a electric violinist. The story changes a bit from the original, but will be familiar to long-time fans. Maria-Clara and her Nutcracker Prince still go on an amazing journey that offers special holiday lessons. And, hip hop legend MC Kurtis Blow opens the fun with a short set and rapping the introduction.

So, mark your calendars for Saturday, December 8 at 8 p.m. at the Palace Theatre. Tickets run $30 - $60 and are available at the CAPA Ticket Center, capa.com or by phone at 614.469.0939.
