From Cookie Monster to Kermit to Elmo, kids of all ages have loved the work of Jim Henson. Now, The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited arrives at COSI for a special engagement. This traveling exhibition explores the work of Jim Henson and how it transformed popular culture. So, get ready to explore the creative side of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math).
Take a look at how Henson and his team made the worlds of The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and more come alive. Henson led a team of builders, writers and performers who gave us some of entertainment’s most endearing and enduring characters. And, his legacy will inspire another generation to explore creativity through science.
Imagination Unlimited looks at Henson’s life, from his younger years through his prolific career. First, check out a Kermit the Frog puppet from 1978. Then, look through sketches, scripts, costumes and more puppets, including Grover, Bert, Ernie and Count von Count. Plus, delve in depth into The Muppet Show, which aired from 1976-1981. You’ll find more puppets, such as Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, his sidekick Beaker, and Scooter. If you’ve always wondered how they filmed The Muppet Movie, check out the set models and storyboards that show how the sets could accommodate both puppets and performers. And yes, you’ll likely have The Rainbow Connection floating playing on repeat in your head after that.
The traveling exhibition is organized by Museum of Moving Image in Astoria, New York with The Jim Henson Company, The Muppets Studio and the Sesame Workshop.
