The Ultimate Artistic Workout - Artists using various media are invited to enter the 10th annual Art at the Arnold competition March 1 - March 3, 2019 which takes place at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus.

Art at the Arnold is three-days of drawing, painting, sculpting, and other creative artistic media. Artists use athletes and models as subjects with the Arnold Sports Festival as a backdrop. Friday, the first day, artists work with models in the connector between the Columbus Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency. Saturday, the artists find subjects among the many events and competitions at the festival. Judging, Awards ceremony, Art Show and Quick Draw contest follow on Sunday at the North Atrium.

Co-chairs of Art at the Arnold are Pertain Gillespie and Kevin Buckland who say Art at the Arnold is fun and educational for both spectators and artists.

The Shot Tower Gallery will present the "not to be missed exhibition" of the work of Ron Anderson and friends to celebrate the Harlem Renaissance.  This exhibition will include two and a half decades of Ron Anderson's paintings from 911 to our first black President and things in-between. Ron Anderson is an oil painter and an art educator, and has been a successful working artist for more than 20 years. He has earned many awards for his oil paintings and was a nominee for the 2005 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio in the Individual Artist category. Ron was a commercial art instructor with The Columbus College of Art & Design for many years and a commercial art instructor with Columbus Public Schools. He has served as an art consultant on several Public Art projects with art commissions that have included oil paintings, graphic design and illustration. Prior to working as a Commercial Art instructor, Ron worked as a fashion illustrator for the Halle's department store in Cleveland, Ohio and for the Lazarus department store in Columbus, Ohio. He also held the position of Fashion Illustrator and Art Director at the corporate office of Madison's, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. Ron's work can be seen at the Ohio Supreme Court, the Middle Passage at the King Center and the Ohio Statehouse. He is known for his visual storytelling and music influenced "scenes" that involve the viewer in the story and action that is occurring. The work is impeccably painted and emotionally charged.

Ron has invited artists Talle Bamazi and Omar Shaheed to exhibit work with him. The three are a part of an African American artist collective in Columbus Ohio.

Talle Bamazi was born in Togo West Africa. He is a painter, and founder of KIACA gallery. His work has themes of history, soul and stories of African and African American vision. He uses his gift of the brush to educate, instruct, and give people a sense that the past is worth studying; for the past dictates the future. Arriving in New York in 1995, with absolutely no understanding of the English language he embarked upon what was the most challenging adventure of his life. His quest for knowledge led him to the New York Student Art League, where he educated himself on American culture in order to infiltrate his vision into a world full of cultural differences. He continued his education at the New York Academy of Art and graduated with a Masters in fine art. This endeavor fueled the desire to take his goal of cultural harmony to a wider audience by using a gallery as a way for his vision to prosper. Talle Bamazi brought the vision to life by creating a gallery where African and African American artists can display their souls through art. He continued his education at the New York Academy of Art and graduated with a Masters in fine art.

Omar Shaheed sculptures are political and tells stories of his life.  “The way he approaches the stone is very intriguing to me because he doesn’t necessarily need his work to have the perfect form,”  explains Michelle Brandt, manager of the BrandtRoberts Gallery, who represents him. “If there’s an odd shape he will leave it and let the stone decide.” Omar studied at the Memphis Art College, Memphis, Tennessee and San Francisco Art Academy. He has work in collections throughout the United States.

The opening reception on November 9 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. will include music by Milton Ruffin and friends and dance interpretations of the work by China White's dancers. China White, a former dancer with the Dance Theater of Harlem was a model for many of Anderson's works.

Generations of Art: The Sunami Family
November 30 - January 5, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, November 30 | 6-9 pm

The Cultural Arts Center, in collaboration with the Columbus Symphony and the Columbus Modern Dance Company, is proud to present Generations of Art: The Sunami Family, an exploration of identity, connection and creative expression spanning the work of four generations of artists in a single, Columbus-based family.

The art exhibition, on view November 30 - January 5, 2019, will include the following artists:
-Soichi Sunami
-John Sunami
-Jennifer Sunami
-Christopher Sunami
-April Sunami
-River Sunami

At the opening reception, CoMo Dance is honored to perform a rare, licensed reconstruction of one of Martha Graham's early dances, "Heretic," the subject of one of Soichi's photographs on display. CoMo has had the privilege of working with former principle dancer of the Martha Graham company, Miki Orihara, as she acted as regisseur for teaching the work. CoMo will be staging "Heretic" in specific detail true of the history of the piece, including wearing the costumes designed by Martha Graham herself. The performance will be played live by a pianist from the Columbus Symphony.

Other highlights of the evening include tableaux vivants by CoMo Dance and the premiere of six original pieces of music, by Chris Sunami, performed by a Columbus Symphony ensemble.

Uniquely curated by renowned author Wil Haygood, this exhibition celebrates the cultural blossoming that occurred in Harlem in the 1920-50s. Featuring works by Jacob Lawrence, Romare Beardon, Aaron Douglas, Augusta Savage, and unprinted photographs by James Van Der Zee, I, Too, Sing America explores the creative, religious, political, and cultural activism of everyday life during this period. In addition, the exhibition honors the extraordinary contributions and impact of individuals such as poet Langston Hughes and philosopher Alain Locke on the development of African American art, music, and literature.

In recent years the world of furniture design has been completely transformed. Once a fairly restrictive field in which form tended to follow function, it is today one of the most dynamic of all creative disciplines. Across a wide range of approaches - sometimes powered by new technology, sometimes simply by their imaginations - artists and designers alike are dramatically expanding the possibilities for furniture. This exhibition focuses exclusively on cutting-edge chair forms, including works by Ron Arad, Wendell Castle, Shiro Kuramata, Humberto and Fernando Campana, and Gaetano Pesce, Donald Judd and John Chamberlain; as well as Joris Laarman, whose high-tech and high-concept designs are shown in particular depth.

Guest Curated by Marc Benda of Friedman Benda and Glenn Adamson.

Supported in part by a grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council.

Take Up Space presents abstraction as it travels across floors, hangs on walls, and is suspended above stairwells. Abstraction runs throughout this space, exploring and becoming territory. The works – mostly paintings – are results of artists’ projects that consider the relevance and power of abstraction’s possibilities.

The works in these galleries respond: to architecture, to history, to color, to taste, to edges, to time, and to our sociopolitical climate. They are explorations of form. They require us to notice their experimentation. They charge us to take the color, shapes, and scale of their structures into account.

Artists include Sarah Cain, Lita Albuquerque, Zachary Armstrong, Sarah Crowner, Tomory Dodge, Tomashi Jackson, Pamela Jorden, Odili Donald Odita, and Jackie Saccoccio.

Supported in part by a grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council.
