SUMMARY:Afrofuturism Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:For this writing workshop\, we will consider what it takes to reach a future where everyone matters. We’ll follow a path carved by recent movements in fiction such as hopepunk and solarpunk\, which feature characters fighting for utopia while resisting its detractors. In a guided writing exercise\, writers will outline the rules for their ideal world\, taking inspiration from the utopian vision for Wakanda in Black Panther and N.K. Jemisin’s short story “The Ones Who Stay and Fight.” \nThis event is a collaboration between FIYAH Magazine and Irrepressible Soul as part of the FREEQUENCY exhibition at Urban Arts Space. FIYAH is a quarterly speculative fiction magazine that features fantasy and science fiction stories by and about Black people of the African Diaspora. \nAbout the Workshop Host: Nelson Rolon is a writer and MFA graduate based in Columbus\, Ohio. His debut novelette\, Saudade\, was published in FIYAH Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction (2018)\, and received mention in Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy (2019). Nelson now serves as Technical Assistant for FIYAH. He lives in a cozy apartment with his wife and their two cats\, Vanta and Muta. Follow Nelson on Twitter @oldmannelson.

SUMMARY:Not Your Mama's Craft Market at the Kee
DESCRIPTION:NEW MARKET\, WHO DIS?!?! NYMCM is pairing up with The Kee for a weekly Farmer’s Market/Vintage Flea every Sunday\, May 19th through September 29th. We are calling it The Warehouse District Farm & Flea! These markets will look a little different than the NYMCM Markets you are used to. Although we will still be hosting handmade vendors at these casual traditional farmers market style markets\, food and produce will be the big event with the addition of a few vintage and handmade vendors. On the first Sunday of every month\, we will kick it up a notch by adding additional vintage vendors to the farmers market mix for a shopping extravaganza we are calling our SUPERMARKET SUNDAY!  \nIn addition to the Farm & Flea\, The Kee will also be hosting its famous Sunday Brunch and will have its indoor cornhole\, arcade and simulated games open. This is the perfect Sunday family outing you were looking for! Mark your calendars to stay and eat\, grab a drink\, listen to music\, play games\, enjoy an art exhibit\, or just hang out in their indoor and outdoor space.

SUMMARY:Columbus African Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Columbus African Festival is a bold\, yet comprehensive approach to cultural reconversion and reconstruction within the African Diaspora in Central Ohio. It is grounded in the fact that many festivals which take place in the African communities are either singular or dual-focused (Film\, Performing Art\, Fine Art.\, etc.) \nThe Columbus African Festival as a theoretical and conceptual framework seeks to take a Renaissance approach to art and various forms of artistic expression. In this context\, art is not just art for art’s sake\, but is the creative cultural production of a people’s common history\, common lifestyles\, and their common and collective aspiration for a higher form of life and humanity. Building on the notion that 2011-2021 is the UN-sanctioned\, International Decade for People of African Descent\, the Columbus African Festival will showcase the breadth and expansiveness of African and Diasporan creative productive capacity with an emphasis on sustainability. \nFestivals are not only for entertainment but are the artistic manifestation of a people’s values\, collective personality\, cultural creativity\, and ultimately\, their aspiration and vision of a higher level of life. Thus\, in this context\, the African-centered Approach to Wholistic Medicine becomes an art form. The Columbus African Festival approach would also highlight the Africanity in Music\, Food\, Dance\, Fashion\, Language\, and even the artistry of the way we love when in harmony with our African self.

SUMMARY:Festival Latino
DESCRIPTION:Festival Latino began as a five-hour pilot project by the City of Columbus in 1996\, and after an overwhelming response\, expanded to a two-day event in 1997. The event offers lively music\, dancing in the streets\, cultural and arts workshops for children and adults\, Latin-American cuisine\, and community information tents. Over the years\, Festival Latino has continued to flourish and grow in the number of performing artists\, workshops\, vendors\, participating community groups\, and audience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen City budget cuts threatened to end the Festival in 2009\, Mayor Michael Coleman asked CAPA to take on production of the Festival. After assessing community interest and sponsor support\, CAPA agreed to produce Festival Latino and continue the popular\, annual event uninterrupted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo make Festival Latino more family-friendly\, CAPA changed it to a free event on Saturday and Sunday from 11am-8pm. CAPA’s first Festival Latino (in 2009) was heralded as a great success by members of the community as well as participants and sponsors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nToday\, CAPA continues to grow and expand the free\, family-focused event\, bringing even more national/international music acts\, Ohio-based Latino dance and music\, children’s activities\, and more for the community to enjoy at Festival Latino each August!
