SUMMARY:Stonewall Columbus Pride March
DESCRIPTION:June 28\, 1969 marked the beginning of the Stonewall Uprising\, a series of events between police and LGBTQ+ protesters that stretched over six days. While the Stonewall Inn and Uprising became well known due to the media coverage and the subsequent annual Pride traditions\, it was simply the fulcrum upon which years of LGBTQ+ activism shifted. \nThe first Pride march in Columbus\, Ohio was held in June 1981. Only 200 people were in attendance\, and some even wore bags over their heads to conceal their identities. \nWhen we last gathered in person\, in 2023\, we were joined by over 22\,000 marchers\, representing a vast array of non-profits\, activists\, community organizations\, corporate sponsors\, small businesses\, and political candidates!

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Ohio Festival
DESCRIPTION:One Hundred and fifty – nine years ago\, our African American ancestors in Galveston Texas celebrated the first Juneteenth festival in the nation. General Gordon Granger read official order #3 to the African American captives of Galveston Texas June 19\, 1865. Two and a half years earlier President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation January 1\, 1863 freeing all African American captives in the rebellious south. This is the event our ancestors recognize as African American Independence Day. The first act of freedom African Americans cherished as the opportunity to reunite with family members and to be self-determined as a people. \n\nThe first celebration of Juneteenth included soul food cook offs\, drinking ice cold red pop\, singing spiritual hymns\, performing re-enactments\, and stage plays that shares tales of bravery\, and courage that included\, The Buffalo Soldiers\, Harriet Tubman\, John Brown\, Denmark Vesey\, and many other heroes\, and sheroes\, of the time. Today Juneteenth is celebrated in over 200 cities nationwide. Juneteenth Ohio has indeed evolved into the 3rd largest celebration in the country\, this accomplishment in itself speaks greatness to the support we receive from the local and statewide community. \n\nThis momentous act is the reason why the Juneteenth Ohio festival continues to be a stable and meaningful celebratory foundation in the lives of African Americans\, Latinos and Native Americans in the state of Ohio. Throughout our 26 years of celebration\, Juneteenth Ohio emerged as the enjoyable family weekend of cultural discovery\, filled with a variety of events promoting cultural unity\, enrichment\, and ethnic diversity\, “key elements that improves the relationships and quality of life among all residents throughout Ohio”.\nThe Juneteenth Ohio Festival will take place June 17th & 18th 2023

DESCRIPTION:Portraiture is the art of creating portraits\, whether of others or yourself\, capturing the essence of a person through an artistic lens. At May’s Artist Commune\, we’ll be focusing on photography portraiture and finding unique ways to approach this art form. Bring any camera you’d like\, whether that’s your smartphone\, DSLR camera\, or a film camera—no photography experience required! Artist Commune is always free and open to all. \nWe’ll start the event at Urban Arts Space\, where each participant will choose a piece from the two exhibitions on view—Freequency and A Love Letter to This Bridge Called My Back—to inspire new ways of considering how we portray people and personal expression. How can portraits liberate us and others? What is gained and lost from what is shown or not shown in a photograph? \nAfter we choose our sources of inspiration\, we’ll take a guided walk down High Street\, finding interesting backdrops for portraits in downtown Columbus. We encourage attendees to collaborate with each other in taking photos and sharing ideas. Community is the essence of Artist Commune. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, we will still host this program\, but the photo portion will happen inside the gallery and the covered Lazarus building galleria and surrounding walkways. We can also get creative with props and lighting if we are limited to the indoors!

The keynote message will be provided by Secretary Patrick J. Murphy\, America’s first Iraq War Veteran elected to the U.S. Congress and the 32nd Under Secretary of the U.S. Army. He will share a powerful message about the importance of paying tribute to our fallen soldiers and their families\, as well as how you can honor their legacy of service.

DESCRIPTION:During Memorial Day weekend\, we honor Families of the Fallen\, those who have lost a loved one in service to our country\, with a Candlelight Vigil.   \nOur guest speaker is Tara Harris\, eldest daughter of First Sergeant Glenn Harris of B Company\, 3rd Battalion\, 75th Ranger Regiment\, who was killed in a training accident barely a year after returning home from the Battle of Mogadishu\, Somalia\, in October 1993. Harris will share her path to healing by reaching out to the Rangers who knew her father best. Tara discovered the surprising power of redirecting grief into something larger than herself. \nAlso\, listen as U.S. Army Veteran and country musician\, Keni Thomas\, shares a special tribute for Families of the Fallen. \nThere will be a dessert reception beginning at 7 p.m. The Vigil procession will step off at 8 p.m.\, and will begin on the Museum rooftop and travel down to the Soldiers Cross in Memorial Grove.
