DESCRIPTION:After spending the ’80s as an up-and-coming jangle pop multi-instrumentalist with acts like Oh-OK\, Lloyd Cole\, The Golden Palominos\, and The Buzz of Delight\, Matthew Sweet emerged as the leading figure of the power pop revival with the release of his platinum-selling breakout record Girlfriend in 1991. Sweet adhered to traditional song craft yet subverted the form by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock\, resulting in an amalgam of the Beatles\, Big Star\, R.E.M.\, and Neil Young. Girlfriend became a word-of-mouth critical and commercial hit with its title track reaching the Top Five on the Modern Rock charts and its anime-styled music videos entering heavy rotation on MTV. \nHis next two records\, Altered Beast (1993) and 100% Fun (1995) continued the hot streak\, producing multiple top ten singles and achieving gold and platinum sales. Sweet’s success continued in the late ‘90’s and 2000’s with successful US and European tours\, major label releases (including Blue Sky on Mars\, In Reverse\, Modern Art)\, and a revered collaboration series with Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) – Under Covers Vols. 1-3. More recent studio albums Sunshine Lies and Tomorrow Forever are championed by critics as persuasive testaments to the enduring qualities of Sweet’s adventurous\, emotion-charged songcraft. On Matthew’s thirteenth album\, Catspaw (2021)\, he plays every instrument (except drums) for the first time in his career. American Songwriter called it “a one-man show of sorts that represents another high point in a career that’s now almost four decades long and shows no signs of lagging.” 2024 saw the release of a newly remixed and remastered archival live recording of Sweet’s epic July 4\, 1993\, headline performance at WXRT’s “Taste of Chicago” in Chicago’s Grant Park.

DESCRIPTION:Meet figures from the past as you follow conductors with lanterns through the darkened hallways and chambers of the Statehouse.  This historical tour is spooky and appropriate for ages twelve (12) and older.  Tours are offered Friday and Saturday evenings on October 18th – 19th and October 25th – 26th. \nAdult (18 and older) is $15.00 \nStudent (12 to 17) is $7.00 \nA $3.00 processing fee will be added to each order. \nUnderground parking is available starting with reasonable rates\, and there are above-ground lots nearby. Enter on the east side (Third Street) of the Statehouse\, or through the Statehouse Underground Garage. Upon arrival\, please head to the check-in table located on the ground floor level. Tours last about 40 minutes and have few opportunities to sit down\, so plan accordingly. \nIn addition to the tour\, you may visit the Statehouse Museum Shop for fun gift ideas and free activities are available in the Crypt from 6:30-8:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Get a jumpstart to trick-or-treating by exploring the historic Ohio Theatre. Kids of all ages can walk through a Halloween-themed version of the Ohio Theatre and collect goodies in this safe\, weather-proof alternative to trick-or-treating. \nCAPA associate organist David Fleisher will perform music on the Mighty Morton organ sporadically throughout the event. “Creatures” courtesy of For All Species Education and characters will be on hand from Castle on a Cloud Entertainment\, as well as a Day of the Dead display. \nIn addition to trick-or-treating\, guests can also grab a craft\, take photos at selfie stations and more. \nTrick-or-treat stations and entertainment will be provided by CAPA and our friends: CCT (Columbus Children’s Theatre)\, Columbus Symphony\, Opera Columbus\, and Short North Stage. \nIn addition\, Columbus Commons will have themed activities from 4-7 pm\, including a dance party on their iconic stage\, spooky readings from the Columbus Metropolitan Library\, photo-worthy creatures by Otherworld\, a sway-pole performance by the Amazing Giants\, Halloween photo opps by Burgundy Ginger Events\, Ohio Apple Cider available for purchase (enjoy with or without “Boo’ze)\, and pumpkins for purchase. Classic Halloween-themed cartoons will be playing on the outdoor video screens. \nNOTE: This event includes stairs. No pets\, other than service animals\, please! \nDon your favorite costume and see a spookier side of the theatre! Arrive anytime between 4-7 pm to participate in the event. \nPreferred parking for this event is in the Columbus Commons garage at 55 E. Rich St.\, a short\, three-minute walk to the theatre. Guests can walk through Columbus Commons and enter the Ohio Theatre under the main marquee on State Street to begin their experience.
