Inside 43215: Downtown Dish: Sophisticated, Not Stodgy

By Heather Brown | 20 Feb, 2012

Sidebar 122 opened in the old Brownstown on Main right before we flipped our calendars to 2012, and if you haven’t sampled the good eats and artisanal cocktails, make plans now. Here’s the scoop on what to expect.

The Mediterranean cuisine infuses customs and flavors of South America, which may sound like an odd combo, but it totally works, delightfully so from small-plate dishes to full-size entries.

While guests peruse the drink and food menu, triangles of crispy-on-the-outside-tender-on-the-inside pita appear. Take a dip in the fragrant hummus, or saunter up to the bar, but don’t expect old stale peanuts. Oh no, guests munch on perfectly crisp pieces of bacon, which go down way too easy with a cocktail or two.

Sidebar 122 specializes in artisanal cocktails made just like they were back in the roaring 1920s. Your wait staff will let you know that it may take a few extra minutes to handcraft your drink, but take the opportunity to enjoy the munchies as you wonder what Al Capone might have been drinking with his motley crew .  For inspiration, head down to the lower level piano bar while your cocktail is carefully prepared with freshly squeezed juices, handcrafted bitters and simple syrups to replicate a cocktail that you might have found in a Chicago-style speakeasy.

Don’t skip out early because the desserts and French-press coffee are sure to impress your gang and are perfect end to a great experience. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.
