Quality of Life Initiative: For the life you deserve.

Within downtown's Special Improvement District (SID), Capital Crossroads is working hard to maintain an outstanding quality of life for all downtown residents. Panhandling is one of the organization's primary focuses, and the issue is currently being addresses through a three-pronged approach that includes education, outreach, and enforcement.

Education
Take Capital Crossroads' advice, and "Put your change where you can make one." Instead of giving money to panhandlers — which can help feed addictions and enable individuals to continue to avoid treatment — Capital Crossroads urges the public to give donations to organizations that help homeless persons make positive changes.

Outreach
Capital Crossroads provides outreach services to individuals in our city who are in need. A full-time outreach specialist works to identify people who need assistance, to build relationships with those people, and to connect them to the services that can help get them off the streets. There are several ways to contact our outreach program:

  • Flag down an ambassador
  • Call the hotline at (614) 228-5718
  • Call the office at (614) 645-5279

Enforcement
In instances when panhandling is aggressive and illegal, Capital Crossroads contacts the Division of Police for assistance. If necessary, Capital Crossroads ambassadors will assist victims in filing charges with the prosecutor's office, if necessary.

Already, this three-pronged approach has proved effective at reducing panhandling in the core of Downtown. About 170 people were moved off the streets and connected with much-needed services in 2005.
